Scientific and Business Communications Specialist

Department: Business Development
Location: Durham, NC


The Scientific and Business Communications Specialist prepares technical and corporate presentations for delivery by company scientists and management to external and internal audiences. He or she is expected to work closely with management to develop visual and written content consistent with the company mission and values.

  • Prepare slides and presentations highlighting company, development programs, capabilities, and technology.
  • Produce content for the company website and other digital platforms.
  • Review and refine posters and slides for external presentation by Precision employees.
  • Prepare general presentation materials such as slide and poster templates.
  • Work with management to convey the company story in presentations to technical, business, and investor audiences.
  • Work with Precision scientists to understand and communicate the technical details of the ARCUS gene editing platform and its applications.
  • Generate new graphics, particularly technical, scientific, and clinical, and maintain a graphics repository for use across communications.
  • Build and maintain a master archive of Precision slides, presentations, and other external communications.
  • Keep current all external communications materials on Precision R&D programs, gathering updates from R&D on a regular basis and converting to “off-the-shelf” slide sets and other communications materials.
  • Regularly update and maintain a record of company milestones and Precision history.

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job successfully.


  • Masters or Doctoral degree (Ph. D.) or equivalent in biology, chemistry, or a related scientific field
  • Three years’ experience in marketing, communications, or editorial with a pharma or biotech; biotech consulting; or in a marketing/advertising firm supporting biotech clients.

Communications and Computer Skills

  • Storyboarding and layout
  • Editing technical content
  • Extensive experience with graphics packages including PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop required
  • Familiarity with molecular imaging software such as Pymol preferred
  • Experience evaluating, contracting, and managing marketing contractors, particularly graphic design firms
  • Cataloging and archiving company materials

Language Ability

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints
  • Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style
  • Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management

Math Ability

  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations
  • Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
  • Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases
  • Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables
